This is a twisted tale of an English family with lots of secrets to hide. The main character, Ian, sometimes tried my patience with his wussiness. Although he is 39 years old, he allows himself ro be bullied by his really nasty older sister. In turn, I felt he bullied his adoptive father about what he considered racist words. Mostly this book was interesting except for a dream-sequence that made almost no sense at all and, in my opinion, would have improved the book by its absence.Another problem was the occasional injection of words that must be familiar to the English but which I had never heard. Even consulting the Amazon Dictionary did not clear it up.
In all tho, the characters were well-drawn and the book was worth the time I put into reading it. (Skip the dream sequence unless you like such.)

It took a while to really get into the book. In fact, I was going to delete the book off my kindle. I am SO glad I didn't. This story makes you as confused at times as the main characters mother. However, right when you think you can't follow this family's secrets, it all comes together. Great ending and closure.
Like a levee constantly needing plugs and shoring, the narrator's life threatens to consume him as he turns from one unsatisfactory element of his crafted existence to another. Being forced to stay with his Alzheimer's ridden mother for a week brings into relief the unfinished issues of his own life...with his siblings, his parents, his wife, his children...his job. Told with self deprecating humor, scenarios are vivid, engaging, and true to life. Initially a man one might disregard, he grows into himself as he finds his rightful place in the symmetry of his world.
I obtained this book through for free. I had no expectations of it. I was by turns entertained, put off, curious, and relieved. What I was NOT was bored or disheartened. A good voice...a good read.
This is a multi-faceted story about caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's and family secrets. It's a well-written, evenly paced book with a much-needed sense of humor and characters that are believable. After reading The Sugar Men by Ray Kingfisher (also a great story), I wasn't expecting the more lightheaded take on caring for an parent with dementia; those who deal with this know how funny it's not. But without making light of the problems that arise with Alzheimer's, he portrays characters that are likable, sympathetic and realistically flawed and their secrets and problems ring true. This story should not be missed.
This is the first novel I've read by Ray Kingfisher and I'm so glad I found him. This is a wonderful work with endearing characters who come to life as if they were real. The author has an intimate understanding of Alzheimer's and helps us realize what it's like to deal with this in someone we love. It's a heartbreaking story in many ways but the humor is irresistible. I loved this family and I will read more of this author. Brilliant!
I really enjoyed this book, and was very disappointed to reach the end. With humour and insight, the author shows us what lays behind the facade of a normal, modern semi-disfunctional family. A son is reluctantly drawn back home to help his aging parents, and in doing so finds out that things that he has taken for granted are not as they seem on the surface. This was so well written. The characters and their interaction was so believable. I found myself really caring about what was happening, and what would happen next. I cannot recommend this book enough.
I read the opening chapters of Matchbox Memories on peer review website You Write On and bought in on on the strength of those opening chapters. Matchbox Memories is the most engaging book I have read for a very long time - it works as comedy, family drama and mystery. The mystery tension is very well held and builds through the story as the comedy and family drama unfold. Basically, the main character has a secret he is holding from his adoptive parents (and natural uncle and aunt) then even more extreme secrets they have held and his siblings have held from one another over the years become the mystery of the story. Meanwhile, it is a bitter-sweet and thoroughly convincing story of the main character looking after his elderly adoptive mother with Altzeimer's while his adoptive father is in hospital. Matchbox Memories is full of original humour, so never becomes too heavy.
For me, Matchbox Memories is the best read I've had all year. Main appeal would be to the over 30's who have had some experience of doddery elders and are interested in the way the generations protect each other by guarding secrets from them. But be assured, it's also very funny and a compelling read from go to woah.
For people reading this review, let me state I have no connection with the author and live on the other side of the world.
Was very unsure about reading a book about a person suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. But this book is so much more than dwelling on this terrible disease. It is not a depressing book by any means. You can read the short synopsis on the site.
The families involved are dealing with their Mother that has the illness, but they are also dealing with their own secrets and lies.
There is a lot of gentle humor that runs through the book. And the book deals with Ruth, (who has Alzheimers) in a very respectful way.
Please do not bypass this wonderful, gentle, warm and humorous story because it deals with an illness that is so sad. It deals with a lot of other family secrets and with the trials and tribulations of all of us humans.
And you will probably see yourself in a lot of the characters.
