This is actually my second time reading this book and I enjoyed it just as much the second time. I will say that I thought the romance was a bit stronger than the suspense. I wanted a bit more in the stalker story line. The author also doesn't really give many clues to the identity of the villain and throws a few red herrings in. In fact, I was completely wrong about who the stalker actually was which doesn't happen often. The action of the story doesn't really take place until the later half of the book. What this book does extremely well is the romance between Nolan and Jillian and the complexity of their characters.

Jillian and Nolan have a lot of chemistry and a definite dislike/attraction relationship. The sexual tension is built slowly and they don't immediately jump in bed so that when the relationship does progress it isn't based on just sex. Although it happens quickly it was believable.

Both Jillian and Nolan have complex characters. Nolan is dealing with PTSD and feelings of guilt for things that happened during his time with the military. I loved that the author used a bit of a different scenario that really caused Nolan to spin a bit out of control and end his time in the military. Jillian is likable and although she occasionally came across a bit too much "poor little rich girl" to me I still enjoyed her. She had a strong sense of loyalty and compassion that was a great match for Nolan. She was intelligent, successful and stubborn but thankfully didn't take that stubbornness to a TSTL level.

The secondary characters had minimal roles but just enough to have me looking forward to getting to know them better and reading their books.

To the Edge The Bodyguards Book 1 Cindy Gerard 9780312990916 Books Reviews

The premise was interesting and both Jillian and Nolan hooked me up since page 1. Cindy Gerard did a terrific job writing their chemistry and sexual tension because they wanted to be together but couldn't (or wouldn't) act on it. It played a bigger role than the suspense plot, which I liked but felt it went through a bumpy road.

About each character…

I liked Nolan. I'm a sucker for the tortured hero who finds redemption and heals. I liked that Nolan started getting to that place but sometimes his alpha attitude would bother me. I do like alpha heroes but Nolan was too much sometimes.

I also liked Jillian but there was nothing astounding about her.

This is a case where I like more two characters when they're a couple than where they're apart.

OVERALL

To The Edge was an interesting first book in a series I am looking forward to continuing with Nolan's brothers and sister.

The plot of the bodyguard and protégée falling in love was well done, especially the chemistry and sexual tension thing.

The suspense plot is in there too but it didn't feel front stage. It is really more Nolan and Jillian fighting their feelings.
This book is good because two things make it stand out

1) The girl is confident -
In too many romance novels (and in real life, sigh) there is so much miscommunication happening. But instead of the main character crying because her love kept pushing her away, she anticipated and expected him to act as he did. She keep at it, sure of what she was reading was love. I like that.

2) The antagonist are not defeated in a celebration but in slight sadness
People must like punishment since it seems to happen in most books where all the blame goes to the antagonist or yelled at by the media. I hate when you hear "oh well its okay the 'bad' guy dies" maybe bad guys are bad because of just this? Don't get me wrong, it's hard to feel for the killers here, yet I'm grateful the author ended the way she did.

I give it 3 stars because some of the book was written better context/ style wise than in other parts. i.e. some flirting scenes were so fun but other times scene to scene felt slighly jagged. Besides writing style, there was a lot conflict repetition which happens too much in romance novels (maybe that is the one thing that is realistic however I just don't enjoy reading the conflict over and over and OVER again....HA). Another repetition was another common romance repetition of "never felt like that" "best I ever had" yada yada... Can authors figure out a better way to show WHY the sex felt so unreal rather than just say it over and over?

I will probably reread then edit my review with more examples and quotes. But the nicest thing about this book is that the main characters are people, realistic or not, that you like, enjoying, for the most part, their dialogues and their lifestyles.
