The first thing to draw me into The Dreamer by E.J. Mellow was the cover. It's absolutely stunning and I want the artwork for my wall. The next aspect to draw me in is E.J.'s writing. It's simple and complex at the same time, beautiful and rich. The story comes to life on the page and lives on, begging you to come back and read every time you take a break. At first, the story seems like a New Adult contemporary romance (which is my jam) until the main character, Molly, gets struck my lightning and something within her awakens, changes. Then something happens. Molly is now having these dreams that are too vivid, too real, for them to be dreams. Besides, Molly doesn't dream. She's never dreamt until she got struck by lightning.
Molly soon starts to live two lives. One when she is awake and one while she's sleeping. In her "awake" life she has her best friend, her parents, her job, and this guy she's been seeing. While in her "dream" life she enters this different world,Terra, a world that is different from her own but is too detailed and lifelike to not be real. She also meets Dev in this world (and Dev is the kind of guy dreams are made of, trust me. He's supa swoony).
The more time Molly spends in her dream life, the more she wants to spend there. She hates waking up and leaving behind this world, leaving behind Dev. And the more time she spends with Dev, the more questions she has and the more feelings toward him start to grow. But she also begins to learn more about the world she's been visiting and what her role in it could be.
Tension, romance, and self-discovery are just a few of the things that happen in Molly's journey in The Dreamer. Molly grows a lot in the book, she has a strong voice with a side of sassy that I loved to read about when Dev was being difficult. When she was in the mood to take no sh*t, she didn't and it was great to see her so vocal on matters of importance to her.
I really, really enjoyed this book! It took me a few chapters to fully get into the story, but the world that E.J. Mellow creates needed time to be built and cultivated, so I'm totally okay with that. Because this world is stunning, absolutely beautiful, with breathtaking imagery and description. The days I was reading it, as I was going to sleep, I wanted to visit Terra and Dev.
Especially Dev.
If you're a fan of new adult, unique reads, stunning details, complex and charming characters, with a storyline that keeps you on your feet than The Dreamer is the book for you.
Just make sure you have the novella and second book already in your possession (or have it coming you way) because I do not and am in desperate need to get my hands on them.

The Dreamer The Dreamland Series Book I Volume 1 EJ Mellow 9780996211413 Books Reviews
This is a book I've been meaning to read for a while. Several of my friends just rave about The Dreamland Series and I have to admit, the breathtaking cover caught my attention almost immediately.
I will admit, The Dreamer wasn't what I was expecting. While very beautifully written and fantastical, it felt more science fiction and psychology than fantasy and magic, but that's not a bad thing at all! It was a world that I never could have imagined and I think that EJ Mellow is the perfect author to tell this story.
As I said, the writing is beautiful. The world-building is divine. The characters and setting are to die for. Yes, there is a bit of a love triangle, and as of right now, I have to admit I'm #TeamJared. I need to read the second book before discussing this with my friends, however, because I'm pretty sure they've all read it. They might know things that I don't! But yeah, as of right now, definitely rooting for Jared. He's just too sweet.
I read a review that called this book "Alice in Wonderland for a new generation." I do believe they were right.
Molly is your normal everyday female living in New York, steady job, wonderful best friend and a developing relationship; that is until her 24th birthday when she gets struck by lightning. For the first time in her life, Molly starts to actually remember her dreams, which are very vivid and seem like she is having the same dream every night. Molly starts to feel as though there are more to these 'dreams' as she slowly starts to be able to explore the world of her dreams.
EJ Mellow did an amazing job when it came to the world building she did for this story. Every time Molly falls asleep and wakes up in the strange dream world I felt as though I was right there beside her experiencing the world for myself. I loved each character that EJ introduced the reader to, especially Dev, and I even enjoyed the love triangle, which I know tends to be something that a lot of readers try to avoid anymore. The love triangle that EJ created will have anyone begging for more when it comes to reading this book because it is so well written and it helps develop the story and the characters.
Overall this book was downright amazing and should be on any readers TBR list, it is well worth the purchase and I can not recommend it enough.
